author's note | valentine's day 2018
This stopped being about me a long time ago.
In 2015, I was asked to write ten stories about my life. The collection was called Re-done, named after a song by a band that no longer exists in a city that always had me calling it home long before it actually was one. I knew I had more to share than just those stories. I'm no longer as hopeful or as naive or as scrawny or as broken. Writing is my way of sharing that progress, tiny stopovers on the journey to my perfect future.
All these stories are love stories. Some are more overt than others: a catalog of a kid who loved too hard and thought too much. Others are less obvious – they sneak their love in the pauses before a song's climax, a doctor's appointment, ripples of anxiety, late-night Greyhound rides. All of them are fueled by the idea that we're linked to something bigger than ourselves.
This is my story, but it's also always going to be written for you, too.
You can read "The First Single" now. It wears its heart on its sleeve, so it's perfect for today. It's my love letter to Philadelphia, the past three years, and every step forward.
Re-done: A Love Story will be released in digital format for pay-what-you-want as well as in paperback format sometime in 2018.
A portion of all proceeds will be sent to Blossom Philadelphia.
See you soon.
With love,James Cassar
